It's That Time of Year Again

One of my favorite things in fall is the Bedford Stuyvesant House Tour.

This is its 35th year and every year the homes are more and more magnificent.  I usually come home filled with ideas (that I can't afford to do), but I make a determined list always.  I can't wait.

A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

The Bedford Stuyvesant House Tour, was wonderful.  I met great people, saw beautiful homes and ran into old friends.  I wasn't able to take photos (rules, rules, rules), but I still took away the gorgeous interiors of a centuries old neighborhood. 

You first get your book for the tour at the Boys High School which is now Brooklyn Academy High School on Putnam and Madison.  Then you walk, ride, drive, and get going there are 11 stops and each stop takes time.  

I am glad I went early, at the first house I got a free cupcake.  That was the icing on the cake of a lovely home.

There is a home that stood out for me, the home of Malene Barnett stood out like a beacon of light.  It was gutted and then she went to work at creating a space that sings in her voice.  It was uncluttered but filled with so much style it was bursting at the seams.  Her commitment to her own aesthetic is apparent and will not be challenged.

Vintage Inspiration

Fashion Meets Real Estate

I enjoyed a visit to 56 Hamilton Terrace, which had on display a small percentage vintage clothing from Miss Lana Turner.  The exhibition is two fold, "Finding Style In Time" and to sell this beautiful single family home.  

The limestone was designed by Henri Foucheaux, built around 1897.  This 4 story home is bursting with 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 7 fireplaces (WHAT!), and so many more details that you have got to see for yourself.  Read more from the Wall Street Journal

Take A Tour, Take Ideas

Ahh, Bedford Stuyvesant, this is where my mother grew up. She hated when people would shorten the name to Bed Stuy and she would promptly correct those making that mistake. The above picture is taken in front of 217 McDonough Street, right in the heart and soul of the hood. She always said the neighborhood was Bedford Ave to Stuyvesant Ave, Fulton St to Mrytle Ave. The neighborhood was mostly white and I think they may have been the only black family on that block. I have heard a story that Poppy (grandfather) bought the home for $8,000 or $10,000 and this was above the market value of the homes of that time (l930's). This obviously has changed and the neighborhood is having a resurgence of interest. Homes sell in the 6 figures and the insides are just as grand as they used to be over 70 years ago.

So I need ideas and I love/hate a house tour. Love the decorating concepts, accessories, and tips. Hate when I come home and say "What a dump, boy I have got to clean up!". Anyway it's all good because it gets me moving either way. This weekend is the 30th Bedford Stuyvesant House tour and I am a house sitter so I get a closer and longer look. Below all the info.
